West Virginia Mountaineers Star Garrett Greene Donates $8.5 Million to Support Morgantown’s Homeless and Underprivileged Youth

MORGANTOWN, WV – – Garrett Greene, the standout quarterback and heart of the West Virginia University Mountaineers football team, has pledged a remarkable $8.5 million to aid homeless and underprivileged youth in Morgantown. Announced today at a press conference outside Milan Puskar Stadium, this transformative donation will fund vital programs providing shelter, education, and mentorship, solidifying Greene’s legacy as a leader both on the field and in the community.

Greene, a senior from Tallahassee, Florida, has been a cornerstone of the Mountaineers’ 2025 season, leading the team to a 4-4 record in the Big 12 with 1,892 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, and a dynamic dual-threat presence. Named a 2024 All-Big 12 honorable mention, his grit and charisma have made him a fan favorite. Now, his $8.5 million gift, one of the largest individual donations to Morgantown’s social services, addresses the city’s homelessness crisis, with over 500 individuals, including many youth, reported as unhoused in recent Monongalia County surveys.

“Morgantown and WVU have given me a home and a purpose,” Greene said, joined by coach Neal Brown and university officials. “This donation is my way of giving back to the kids who need support. I want them to know they can overcome anything.” The funds, sourced from Greene’s Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) earnings and personal investments, will be distributed through partnerships with local organizations, including the Bartlett Housing Solutions and the Morgantown Community Youth Initiative.

The donation will be allocated over five years, with $4.5 million dedicated to Bartlett Housing Solutions to expand shelter and transitional housing programs, serving over 800 youth annually. Another $2.5 million will fund the Morgantown Community Youth Initiative’s mentorship and scholarship programs, targeting underprivileged youth pursuing education or vocational training. The remaining $1.5 million will enhance mental health and addiction recovery services, addressing critical needs in Morgantown’s underserved communities.

The announcement has ignited Mountaineer Nation, with fans on X posting, “Garrett Greene’s $8.5M for Morgantown’s kids? That’s Mountaineer spirit!” The gift aligns with WVU’s 2025 season, where the team is pushing for bowl eligibility. Greene’s generosity has inspired teammates, with running back CJ Donaldson Jr. stating, “Garrett’s heart for this community motivates us to play harder for West Virginia.”

“Garrett Greene embodies what it means to be a Mountaineer,” said athletic director Wren Baker. “His donation will change lives and strengthen our community. We’re proud to have him leading our team.” The gift complements WVU’s community outreach, including the Mountaineer Athletic Club’s youth programs, and follows a recent $25 million endowment from former coach Don Nehlen for the football program.

Advocates have hailed the donation as a lifeline. “Garrett Greene’s contribution will provide hope and opportunity to Morgantown’s youth,” said Lisa Thompson, director of Bartlett Housing Solutions. “This funding allows us to scale our services and empower kids to thrive.” Morgantown Community Youth Initiative CEO Sarah Jenkins added, “This gift will open doors for young people to achieve their dreams.”

Greene’s journey with WVU began in 2020, redshirting before emerging as the starting quarterback in 2023. His leadership guided the Mountaineers to a 9-4 record last season, including a Duke’s Mayo Bowl win. Off the field, Greene has embraced Morgantown, volunteering at local schools and youth camps. His donation builds on his growing philanthropy, fueled by lucrative NIL deals as one of WVU’s most marketable players.

As the Mountaineers prepare for a pivotal home game against Baylor, Greene’s gift has electrified the fanbase. Fans at Milan Puskar Stadium are expected to honor him during the game, with a planned tribute celebrating his impact. The donation aligns with his commitment to West Virginia, where he plans to remain post-graduation, mentoring young athletes.

With this historic $8.5 million donation, Garrett Greene is not only etching his name in WVU football history but also fostering a stronger, more compassionate Morgantown. His generosity serves as a beacon of hope, inspiring the next generation to rise above challenges and embody the Mountaineer spirit of resilience and community pride.
